You would think that a character as Thanos would be unique, having a somewhat unique origin. You would be wrong. It is not that he is a part of the character or anything of pre-characters, but he is certainly not the most unique creation in the history of comics. Writer and artist Jim Starlin conceived Thanos while in psychology class in college. This largely explains what Thanos is touted as such a compelling, complex villain - but Starlin also drew from a very popular established source.

Thanos is directly derived from characters created by another comics creator Jack Kirby. Starling based Thanos exclusively on the New Gods character Metron, but took the character more in the direction of Darkseid, the evil overlord of the planet  Apocalypse from the same series, as suggested by his editor.

 Fortunately, the resemblance is only skin deep. The two characters have varying levels of empathy and sympathy, with Thanos having previously fought alongside heroes. We think it is safe to say that is not really the style of Darkseid. However, the two were forever tied to each other.
